Band of Holy Joy - This Rhythm of Life - My thoughts

I received an email today from Band of Holy Joy announcing their new video. This comes as a real treat to the psyche, as a soft blow of hope to the weary head after what has been a very challenging year.  

Johnny Brown vocalist from "Bad Punk" radio show on Resonance FM was first to introduce me to the band when we met at Gallery46 where we were both performing.  The band seemed reminiscent of the 80s and I was immediately a fan.  Since then I've performed live several times on his radio show which broadcasts every Friday at 10pm.

What makes the song good?  The song has a nice long intro. The temptation to launch into the chorus too soon is wholeheartedly resisted.  As the song unfolds intensity rises and breaks loose, the message to "do the right thing" rings fourth and a cyclops eye takes us on a journey of historical social triumphs, reminding us "why we do it" and the things "we believe in".  This happens amongst the lush sound of the full band of vocals, strings, drums, bass, guitars, piano and synths made up by the seven members of the band

The songs structure is that of a journey of a character living in the city who is always pushing for social change. The song reaches its peak with catchy lyrics towards the end as it unleashes its full power, remaining in the mind as an anthem of hope. All of this happens as the central character in the film holds up different masks guiding the viewer through the narrative of the song.

The song is from the soon to be released album DREAMS TAKE FLIGHT, on Tiny Global Productions.

There is the correct way to play a violin and then there is the other way to play a violin. You are either in camp 1: play the violin correctly or camp 2: play the violin with baked beans. If you are in camp 1, you need not read further.  
Right now that's sorted and only the relevant readers are still with us. An unsuspecting violin sits on the play table of Giblet Gusset.  Now we've all been here, sometimes you just find yourself with a spare can of baked beans and you wonder what to do with it.  Giblet Gusset has found a solution, the tender pouring of baked beans onto the violin is wonderfully done, and then just when you felt there is no turning back we discover there is an undo, and the beans return to the can.  Sonic assault with dance moves. Is this going to be a choreographed room of dancers in bikinis you wonder? Is this the beginnings of a cheesy 15 sec TikTok choreographed video. No and N0, that is not where we are going.  There is no need to stop screaming.  The sound of baked beans, a bow and a violin is, well, quite captivating.  The distant memory of a voice telling you not to play with your food amongst the inner screams of the baked bean, and slippery red sauce in full indulgence. The full English breakfast dissected and disembowelled. Sonic assault with dance moves.  Fucking fuck the fucking fuckers.  Will the violin be washed down with a hose and hung out to dry? All the weeping violin teachers gonna weep.  The End :)

Collecting Found Sounds

I'll be documenting some of the research into found sounds for a new album. I'm collecting a variety of sounds from the natural world and the city to use as samples within musical pieces.  These two pictures are on the coast in Kent where there is an abundance of varied landscape and coastal structures containing history from WW2. The human made structures and nature clashing against one another is of interest to me. Huge blocks of concrete meet the sea creating deep blue pools when the tide is in.  The human made structures contain metal parts which have corroded over time leaving an amazing rust colour. I found a heavy rusted piece of metal on the shore and used it to make sounds with the pebbles, the sound of metal hitting loose stone.
    
I'm recording samples of 1-10 seconds which I'll then transfer over to my sampler.

Henry Collins and Lydia Morgan in conversation....What the hell is this

I hear you say as you randomly stumble on the conversation that is going on here between Lydia and Henry.
What the hell indeed!
Track 1.  Lydia and Henry introduce themselves by attacking each others vocal chords with a saw, so you can hear bits of flesh flying everywhere here.
Track 2.  Obviously this is the Bill Murray theme tune, I need say no more.  Lydia and Henry have ingested themselves backwards. Bill Murray can fuck off.
Track 3.   Lydia has Henrys head in a vice and is hitting him repeatedly with a cylindrical object. This is otherwise known as circuit bending in some communities but here they explore this concept further.
Track 4.  Here they have leggo in the blender but also mixed in some farts, nice one.  Henry is actually a cave man.  I like caves.
Track 5.  Fuck Nemo
Track 6. F**k stone henge
Track 7. The two lovely girls got hungry so made some hamburgers out of moth debris and singing bowls.  Henry got too much hungry tho and ate off his own hand before they were finished.
Track 8. I'm glad they mentioned sex appeal cause this is obviously the point of this album.

Track 10.  marbles
Track 11.  After all that grime they were dirty so went for a shower, Henry Bled to death after Lydia re-enacted  Psycho.

Track 13. Lydia covers Henry in sticky tape and now we have the sticky tape man.
Track 14. Pea soup is disgusting and this is obvious. They used it in the famous Brain Dead film in the puke scenes. L and H are zombies.
Track 15. Finally some harsh noise.
Track 16. I'm nearly half way through this review, I need a caawwwfeeee.
Track 17.  Tarot reading is bullshit. Narcissists rock.
Track 18.  L and H form a human pyramid by multiplying themselves and then chew off their own limbs. While rummaging through a pile of dislocated heads.
Track 19. I had to pause the review here because auto correct was annoying me by underlining narssisists, who can spell that word anyway, it's just done it again..
Track 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29. 30 real deep. Weebly crashed. revenge of the rubberbands, feedback gone, f**k Stratocasters, get in with the slim crack pot, the seven dwarfs came for a visit, knives and rummaging and stuff in your ears and creeky rusted automobile down the pipe work of stop swearing. Snoring is the giant at the top of the beanstalk pillow suffocation, a dent in the arm of forever. I can't stand this, someone turn this shit off, I'm going to Ibiza, shave your own head meat ball, you can't sing dick head, I'm going for a swim.

Apoptek @ New River Studios

It's not often that we get visitors from Apoptek to London so this was a rare experience on the 18th of September 2015.  Several weeks before Musicologists: drones4u, Kamura Oscura, Listen Lisse, MW and Blit went on a geological and musicological trip and met the last remaining members of a tribe called Apoptek.  After staying several nights in their habitual caves they found a new frequency to share with the world. This frequency usually un-traceable by the human ear was transmitted to the audience on the night of the 18th via the airwaves within New River Studios.  Since that night audience members have reported amongst other things: UFO sightings, dreams of Apoptek proportions, transcendental dreamscapes, meditative states of euphoria, altered states of reality and advanced sensory perception.

The new frequency found in Apoptek can be experienced here through these rare recordings of the event:

An album has been released by MXLX called "I aim to understand nothing" but I'm not convinced it is an album at all. Rather it seems to be an obvious rip off of other artists work!

I had the rare chance to see Robert Ridley-Shackleton play live at Ryan's Bar. Who is Ryan? Don't know.  Robert told me his cassette was shit and it was, but it's good shit if you like that sort of thing.  The tape I got was like listening to somebody messing about with music two rooms away and I had to put it up so loud that the hum of the tape was nice. It ended with biblical readings which took me right back to Christian brainwashing techniques from the 80's.  You get free cardboard with the tape.

I've listened to this album now 10 times and keep coming back to the song The Private Boss of a Meaningless Jewel. I may never leave the house again because I want to listen to it over n over.  I may however load it onto my ipod or tablet and walk around outside with this album playing. You should as well.
